Have you clients who’ve been trying to have a baby for a year without success or have you actually been letting them know to keep waiting? It’s time to refer them to see a fertility doctor.
They will be asked to run series of tests to help determine what might be causing the delay. From the results, the fertility doctor can define where the challenge is coming from and how to overcome the challenge in order to achieve conception.

What are the basic Assisted Reproduction Techniques recommended?
First line treatment: Ovulation induction, Timed Intercourse and intrauterine insemination (IUI)
Second line treatment: In-vitro Fertilization (IVF)

INDICATION FOR FIRST LINE TREATMENT OPTIONS
Unexplained infertility
This is a condition where all that is required a couple to achieve pregnancy is present and within normal range but for some reason, their desire is not met.

Polycystic Ovaries
This is a condition in some women that affect their ability to ovulate thus preventing them from releasing their eggs on a regular basis.

HIV infection
For a Sero-discordant couple, that is where one partner is HIV positive and the other is negative.

INDICATIONS FOR IVF
Maternal Age
Advanced age is known to impact negatively on the ability of a woman to get pregnant, partly because the quality and quantity of her eggs has reduced drastically and fertilization of the eggs is more difficult as the advances.

Tubal factors
Any condition of the fallopian tubes will affect fertility since the tubes serve as a conduit for fertilization of an egg by the sperm. In such a condition the solution is to bypass the tubes and fertilize the eggs with sperm outside of the body.

Male factor infertility
A deviation from the normal optimal parameters of a man’s sperm, whether, from the count, motility or appearance, it may compromise the ability to fertilize a woman’s eggs. This leads to the need of using a special technique like ICSI (Intra-cytoplasmic sperm injection) to achieve fertilization.

Endometriosis
This is a condition that affects the quality of a woman’s eggs adversely and requires a combination of medical and surgical management. Here IVF Serves as the effective second-line treatment option to achieve conception.
