In the latest in our election survey series, we wanted to know how various factors would influence the choice of doctors in the upcoming election, the political party doctors considered to have a good health care plan and finally the issue doctors want government to place at the front burner.

Highlights include:

1. To doctors, the economy and security are greater influencing factors than health care. 2. 36.43% of respondents believe the All Progressives Congress (APC) have a good health care plan. 31.01% choose the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) while 32.56% consider NONE of the parties to have one. 3. Doctors believe government should place a greater priority on healthcare funding. Among the listed issues, medical tourism ranked least. Tell us what you think?

The survey population is too small to give a true picture of the overall response. Being a selective survey not surprisingly full of systematic error (bias), one expects that doctors should place the highest priority on health. Indeed health is everything (see the WHO definition). Security and economy will improve with improved health status. We can work it out.

There is no point embarking on goose chasing data analysis/interpretations. We know the party/government that gave Nigerians a perfect health care framework - the National Health Law. We know the party/government that has considered obliging doctors short payments that date 22yrs back. We know the party/govt that has given 1% consolidated revenue to public health. We have identified the party/govt by its fruits.

Neither of the 2 major political parties have health of Nigerians at heart. Health cannot be seen - that is their take. A popular s/w governor once said that some doctors earn bigger salary than his! That is the joke they have turned medical progression to. The health law may help us, but who will challenge a government. that deliberately jettison the law. What was done to governors who signed commitment to the strategic health development plan in October 2010 but did nothing thereafter. Health means nothing to our politicians until they themselves fall I'll.

President Jonathan should be given the mandate to execute the planned transformAtion agenda. We are all stakeholders and our common interest is a better Nigeria. The composition of the opposing party has too many defects. As a matter of fact there are multiple genetic mutants capable of structural and functional anomalies in the development of Nigeria.
