Sokoto State government has employed no fewer than 21 doctors who just graduated from the Usman Danfodiyo University, to help increase man power requirement in the health sector, even as the governor has also facilitated the circumcision of boys in the hospitals.
The governor who attributed the intervention in circumcision (wanzamai) to the fatalities among boys resulting from traditional practice known as (Kuidu) hitherto engaged in by the locals, assured that various training programmes have been organized for the traditional surgeons.
According to Tambuwal’s spokesperson, Imam Imam, the traditional surgeons are undergoing training that would guarantee basic hygiene and allows for standard operating procedure.
Imam Imam hinted also that, state commissioner for health , Dr Shehu Kakale who briefed Governor Tambuwal on development in the health ministry insisted that the 21 doctors engaged by the government will be posted to the various primary healthcare centres across the state.
He disclosed further that efforts are on top gear to regularise the professional qualifications of 309 nurses and midwives from the state to help in their acceptance into the state civil service.
Talking on the 21 newly engaged doctors, Dr Kakale said, “As fresh graduates, they are expected to undergo housemanship, but in the meantime, they have received enough training to handle primary health challenges associated with the grassroots level.
“We will support them to ensure they complete their further training,” he said.
