The wife of Nigeria's President, Hajiya Aisha Buhari has called on wives of all state governors to act as goodwill ambassador and advocate for better health policies for women and children to prevent maternal and child deaths.

She said that India and Nigeria still account for one third of all maternal deaths in the world which is not in line with the policy of Muhammadu Buhari's led-government.

Speaking during the 4th Annual National Family Planning Consultative Meeting today in Abuja, Hajiya Aisha Buhari, who was represented by wife of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mrs Gimbiya Dogara, said that the evidence that family planning is a key strategy necessary to promote maternal health and wellbeing is well established.

"Women need to be supported to have equitable access to reproductive health services to reduce maternal morbidity and mortality.”

The first lady who was awarded Goodwill Ambassador for Women and Children's Health, said, "My investiture today as Goodwill Ambassador for Women and Children's Health makes all the wives of State Governors Goodwill Ambassadors also.

"I therefore call on all the wives of Governors to promote women and children's Health in your respective states as well as encourage your husbands to make more investments in healthcare for our mothers and children. "

She promised to support the Federal Government to contribute to the accelerated reduction in ending Preventable Maternal, New born and Child deaths by lending her voice through advocacy and the strengthening of accountability mechanisms.
