The Minister of Health, Prof. Isacc Adewole, has implored the Legislature not to reduce the budget for health as this could impact on plans to revitalise the primary healthcare system.

He made the appeal in Abuja during a public hearing on the urgent need to avert a national health crisis through revitalization and adequate funding of primary healthcare, organised by the House of Representative Committee on Health Services.

“Please, preserve our budget. Do not cut it. We will want to deliver health care to our people,” Adewole appealed to the committee.

The Minister said the Federal Government was working with private sectors to explore alternative sources of funding to the health sector.

“The Federal Government cannot do it alone,” said Adewole.

Chairman of the House Committee on Health Care Services, Chike Okafor, said that the objectives of the public hearing were to map out strategies and activities for primary healthcare revitalisation and financing.

More than N221 billion in Nigeria’s N6 trillion budget was allocated to health.
