The Wife of Vice – President of Nigeria, Mrs. Dolapo Osinbajo has appealed against the use of hard drugs in Nigeria. The Wife of the Vice – President, made this known when the Presidential Advisory Committee on the Elimination of Drug Abuse paid a courtesy and advocacy visit on the Hon. Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, who is also a member of the Committee, in Abuja, recently.
Mrs. Osinbajo noted that the drugs that are commonly abused include cigarettes, caffeine, tramadol and codeine.
She further said that ‘’the Committee would ensure that Health Facilities across the country will not only heal drug user’s body but their minds, ensuring those free from drugs addiction do not get back to it, she added.
In his welcome address, the Hon. Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole said the narrative that drug abuse was common in the Northern Nigeria, especially Kano State is not true, adding that other states like Lagos, Rivers, etc. are involved in drugs.
He pointed out that ‘’the working group should look at the codeine and other related drugs and enforce ban on their production, distribution and sales.’’
In his remarks, the Former Military Governor of Lagos State, Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa, (retd), who is the Chairman of the Committee, pledged that the Committee would interact with critical stakeholders charged with the responsibility of putting an end to the issue of drug abuses in the Country.
Members of the Presidential Advisory Committee include Wives of the President and the Vice-President, representatives of Governors’ Wives Forum (North and South), Nigeria Custom Service, NAFDAC, NDLEA, Nigeria Police and other stakeholders.
