The Honourable Minister of Health, Professor Isaac Adewole has commended Miss Progress Oberiko, an indigene of Sapele LGA, Delta State, who recently passed out as a Youth Corper in Cross Rivers State, for drawing attention to the plight of the homeless family on the Streets of Ogoja, Cross River State.

Miss Oberiko, who broke the news to Nigerians through various media outlets like blogs, social media platforms and Newspaper reports  while serving in Bekwarra LGA of the State said she came across the family (man, wife and three kids)  for the first time, when she arrived Ogoja in January 2018.

She narrated that the family sat under a tree by a roadside, chatting and laughing.  Out of curiosity, Miss Oberiko said she enquired to know about the family through the cyclist she boarded. Furnished with some insight about the family’s predicament, Oberiko said “I was moved by compassion for a family who needed so much help but whom no one paid attention to.” This encounter, according to Oberiko, informed her investigations, more publications and subsequent attention from the Federal government and the general public.

Professor Adewole on receiving the news through Punch newspaper directed the Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Calabar, to immediately embark on a rescue mission to Ogoja.

In view of this, Adewole who noted that the family was picked up and moved to the Hospital in Calabar and that treatment had commenced, therefore commended the prompt response of the hospital management who had since stabilised the health condition of the family.

While reiterating the Federal Government’s commitment to cater for the health of Nigerians irrespective of their Social Status, the Minister called on all Nigerians to be each other’s keeper and draw the attention of government to desperate situations when it was needed, urgently.

Miss Oberiko expressed deep appreciation to the Hon. Minister of Health for his response and ensuring that the family is now receiving attention.
